HOW TO FIND AND CLEAN A WASHING MACHINE FILTER
Understanding what a washer filter is and where it is located in your washing machine can help you handle laundry day like a pro. Follow this guide to discover everything you need to know about washer filters, including how to find and clean them.
What is a washer filter?
A washer filter, which can also sometimes be known as a drain pump filter, is an integral component of the washing machine draining system. The washer filter is responsible for protecting the drain pump from lint buildup and other obstructions so that your washer can drain properly after each wash cycle.
DO ALL WASHING MACHINES HAVE FILTERS?
Not all washing machines have removable filters and newer models often don't have filters that need to be cleaned by the consumer.
WHERE IS THE FILTER LOCATED ON A WASHING MACHINE?
The filter may be located in different places in a top loading vs. a front loading washing machine. Check your owner’s manual for your specific model.
In top loading washing machines, filters are typically located inside the center agitator or along the top rim of the drum. To find the filter, check the agitator for a removable cover that may reveal a lint trap, or feel around the top lip for a round or rectangular screen that can be taken out for cleaning.
Front loading washers usually have filters accessible from the outside. Look for a small hatch at the bottom corner of the machine, where a filter may be hidden. Additionally, check the end of the drainage hose for a small mesh screen that can trap lint and debris.
Top load washer filter location
Most top load washers made after 2001 do not have washer filters in their drainage system. Instead, newer models utilize a more powerful drain pump and larger drain holes. If you have a model made before 2001, you can usually find the washer filters at the bottom of the washer drum underneath the agitator.
If you’re unsure of the year your machine was made, consult your owner’s manual for more details on the appliance’s drainage system.
Select Maytag® top load washers offer the Pet Pro Filter and Pet Pro Option designed to lift and capture 5x more pet hair from clothes than standard washers1. You can simply twist and lift this built-in filter from the agitator, then easily remove trapped pet hair.
Front load washer filter location
Although the location of a washer's drain filter can vary depending on the make and model, front load washer filters are often located near the drain pump at the bottom of the appliance. Keep in mind that not all drain pump filters on front load washers are accessible.
For model specific information about your washer filter, consult your product manual.
Do I need to clean my washing machine filter?
To help keep your washing machine performing like it should, proper washer cleaning and maintenance is recommended. Whether you need to clean your washing machine filter will depend on the model. Keep in mind that many new models no longer require this filter. Learn more about how to clean a washing machine.
Always consult your washing machine’s use and care guide for model specific cleaning instructions and frequency.
How often should I clean a washer filter?
Your washer filter cleaning schedule will vary depending on the manufacturer instructions. In most cases, it is recommended that filters be cleaned at least once a month.
Those in larger households or who regularly launder heavily soiled items may need to clean their filter more frequently.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON’T CLEAN MY WASHING MACHINE FILTER?
If you don't clean your washing machine filter, lint, hair and food particles can accumulate, which may impact product performance and potentially result in the need for service.

SUPPLIES
- Warm water
TOOLS
Shallow container or bowl
Screwdriver or wedge tool
Gloves
Cleaning wipes or cloths
Small towel or rag
STEP 1: PREPARE THE WASHER AND GATHER SUPPLIES
If you have a front load washing machine, you will need to do a few extra steps before cleaning the filter. Before you begin, unplug the washing machine or turn off the power supply. Make sure you have your tools and supplies nearby, as well as a shallow container to catch any water. Cleaning wipes or a cloth will help you remove debris around the filter.
STEP 2: LOCATE THE FILTER
The filter is usually located at the bottom front of the washer. In front load washers, the filter is often hidden behind a small panel or cover. For top load washers, the filters are often inside the center agitator or along the top rim of the drum. Check your washer’s manual for specific instructions on how to access the filter.
STEP 3: PREPARE TO DRAIN THE WATER
If you have a front load washing machine, you will then place a shallow container or bowl under the filter area to catch any water that may spill out. Some front load machines may have a hose to help the water drain. Be prepared for some water to come out when you open the filter. Keep a towel handy to wipe up any excess water. Top load units will not need to be drained.
STEP 4: REMOVE THE FILTER
Carefully unscrew or pull out the filter from the drain pump. Some washers may require a screwdriver to remove the panel covering the filter. Once the filter is removed, use gloves (if desired) to handle any debris, lint or buildup.
STEP 5: CLEAN THE FILTER
Rinse the filter thoroughly under warm water, ensuring that all particles are washed away. Use a soft brush or cloth if necessary to scrub away stubborn dirt. Be sure to remove and throw away as much debris and lint as possible.
STEP 6: INSPECT AND CLEAN THE FILTER HOUSING
Before reinserting the filter, use a cleaning wipe or cloth to clean the area around the filter housing. This may help remove any hidden buildup or debris that could cause future clogs.
STEP 7: REINSERT THE FILTER
Once the filter is clean and dry, reinsert it into the drain pump. Make sure it is securely in place, and then close the filter panel or cover.
