So you’ve made the decision to step up your space with a new appliance. While you wait for it to arrive, there are some basic things you can do to prepare, and some more specific actions to take depending on if you’re expecting a refrigerator, dishwasher, range, washer or dryer. Read on to help appliance delivery and installation go as smoothly as possible.
How to Prepare for Appliance Delivery and Installation: The Basics
An appliance installation shouldn’t take longer than an hour, but try to keep up to four hours free. The installers should bring all the necessary parts and tools, but you can prepare by running through this pre-delivery checklist.
1. MAKE PLANS FOR YOUR OLD APPLIANCE
Most retailers offer services that uninstall your previous appliance and haul it away. All you have to do is make sure the appliance is completely empty. If you’re uninstalling yourself, first shut off power to the appliance as well as the water or gas supply, then disconnect any water, gas or electric lines and hoses before pulling it out of place. You should be able to find a service that will remove, donate or recycle your appliance for you.
2. MAP A PATH FOR THE NEW APPLIANCE
Measure the width of each doorway, hallway and stairwell the appliance may pass through to ensure it will fit. Avoid stairs and corners if possible. Make sure the pathway is clear of personal items, including tables or furniture that may get in the way.
If necessary, your delivery crew should be able to remove exterior doors (hinge pins) to gain access, but won't remove interior doors, handrails, banisters, screen doors or any personal possessions.
3. INSPECT YOUR SPACE FOR THE PROPER HOOKUPS
Check for proper plumbing and correct water lines for appliances like washers, dishwashers or refrigerators with a water dispenser. Ensure there are nearby electrical outlets that fit your new appliance plug. If you’re installing yourself, make sure you have the right parts and hookups.
4. DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR APPLIANCE CUTOUT DIMENSIONS
Measure the height, width and depth of your space to ensure the dimensions of your appliance match, keeping in mind that most will need some breathing room for venting, hookups and to allow doors to open. How to Prepare for Washer and Dryer Delivery and Installation
In addition to basic delivery preparation, there are appliance-specific installation requirements to consider.
Washers
Check your space for a three-pronged, 110-volt outlet. Make sure there are hot and cold water valves within four feet of the washer, and that they’re in good working order and have standard metal connections.
Electric & Gas Dryers
Electric: Check your space for a three- or four-pronged, 220-volt outlet, as well as a ventilation port.
Gas: Check for a three-pronged, 110-volt outlet, as well as a ventilation port. Make sure there’s a gas shut-off valve right behind the dryer and that it’s in good working order and has a standard metal connection.
How to Prepare For Refrigerator, Dishwasher and Range Delivery and Installation
In addition to basic delivery preparation, there are appliance-specific installation requirements to consider.
Refrigerators and Dishwashers
Check your space for a three-pronged, 110-volt outlet. Make sure there’s a water shut-off valve within six feet, and that it’s in good working order and has a standard metal connection.
Electric & Gas Ranges
Electric: Check your space for a three- or four-pronged, 220-volt outlet.
Gas: Check for a three-pronged, 110-volt outlet. Make sure there’s a gas shut-off valve right behind the range and that it’s in good working order and has a standard metal connection.
INSTALLING YOUR NEW APPLIANCE YOURSELF
If you plan on tackling the job alone, make sure you’ve purchased the right appliance parts required for installation. For example, you'll need new water supply hoses for a dishwasher, a new vent kit for a dryer or a new gas connector for a gas range. These installation parts don't come with your new appliance and need to be purchased separately. They should be brand-new to work best with your appliance.
