HOW TO WASH DOG LEASHES & HARNESSES

Dogs can be loving, but messy companions. It’s important to keep them clean from head to tail. Part of this process includes cleaning accessories like dog toys, blankets, leashes and harnesses. Read this helpful guide to learn how to clean a dog harness and dog leash. Always remember to follow the care label for washing recommendations and be mindful of the fabrics and materials that make up your pup’s leashes and harnesses.

CAN YOU WASH A DOG LEASH IN THE WASHER?

Many leash materials can be washed in the washing machine. If the care label allows for machine washing, use a mesh laundry bag to help avoid damage to your machine or the leash. If you don’t have a mesh bag available, try throwing a few towels into the same load along with the leash to protect your machine. It’s important to note that machine-washing your dog’s leash or harness could possibly weaken the material. Follow the care label for the best approach to cleaning.

CAN YOU WASH A DOG HARNESS IN THE WASHING MACHINE?

Similar to leashes, you can wash dog harnesses in the washing machine using a mesh garment bag. Check the care label to ensure that it is safe to machine-wash your dog’s harness.

Materials such as leather should never be put in the washing machine. If your dog’s harness contains leather elements, your best option is to hand wash it.

STEP 4: RINSE & HANG DRY

Rinse the leash or harness under running water to fully remove any remaining suds and soap. Squeeze out excess water before setting it out to dry. Ensure that the item is fully dried before using it again. Never put your dog’s leash or harness in the dryer; otherwise, it may weaken the webbing and materials.

HOW TO DISINFECT A DOG LEASH

Follow the steps above before disinfecting your dog’s leash or harness. Before you begin disinfecting, check the item’s care label. Using a pot of boiling water, carefully submerge the items for at least five minutes. Air, hang or sun dry as needed.

Disinfection can be done in several ways, including with high heat, steam cleaning or a laundry-safe disinfectant in a hot water cycle using a garment bag.

TIPS FOR WASHING DOG HARNESSES AND LEASHES

  • Wash your dog’s collar with leashes or harnesses.

  • Avoid using chemical-based, scented detergents or soaps when cleaning dog leashes or harnesses.

  • Mild dish soap can help remove grease stains on your dog’s items.

  • For items that have close contact with your pet, use pet-safe detergents or dog shampoo.

  • Always air dry leashes and harnesses as placing them in the dryer may damage the webbing in the items.

  • If you don’t have garment bags on hand, wrap leashes or harnesses in dog blankets or removable dog bed covers to protect your washing machine.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN A LEATHER DOG LEASH OR HARNESS?

Use a non-toxic, pH-balanced leather treatment to clean leather items. Leather should be spot-cleaned regularly, following the leash or harness care instructions. Avoid soaking, cleaning solutions or direct sun exposure, so the leather doesn’t become cracked or damaged.

Allow the leather to air dry completely before conditioning with an all-natural, dog-safe leather cream.
