HOW TO RESET A WASHING MACHINE

If you want to try resolving issues with your washing machine, such as power surges or error codes, it’s possible you might need to perform a quick reset. One way you can reset a washer is by unplugging the unit for at least one minute, then plugging it back in and restarting the appliance.

However, depending on your issue, you may need to take another approach. Keep reading for helpful tips on how to reset a front load washer or top load washer.

REASONS TO RESET A WASHING MACHINE

There are a handful of reasons why you may need to reset a washing machine. Your washer detecting unbalanced loads or displaying error codes are a few cases that may prompt you to reset your washer. Find more reasons that may require a reset below:

  1. Power Outages: Sudden power outages or power surges may require you to reset your washer. A reset can also be helpful if your appliance was suddenly unplugged.

  2. Error Codes: Many washers display error codes due to malfunctions. If your washer is presenting an error code, refer to your owner’s manual for guidance on what they might mean. If the error codes remain after the problem has been addressed, a reset may clear them.

  3. Control Lock is Activated: If the control lock is engaged, the washer may not operate. Refer to your owner’s manual to learn how you can reset the control lock feature. If the washer remains locked after following all instructions, a reset may help.

  4. Unbalanced Loads: Top load washers may detect unbalanced loads and stop the machine from performing a cycle. If the problem persists after properly redistributing the items in the washer, it’s possible that a reset may help resolve this.

  5. Test Mode: If you find that your washer is stuck in test mode, it may need to be reset before it can continue running a cycle.

  6. Sensor Malfunctions: Sensors that are unresponsive may need a reset to recalibrate them.

  7. General Glitches: Similar to many electronic devices, washers can experience occasional glitches. A reset can potentially fix minor glitches.

If your washer still experiences issues after running through these troubleshooting tips, you may need to troubleshoot further or enlist professional help.

IS THERE A RESET BUTTON ON WASHING MACHINES?

Most washing machines don’t have a dedicated reset button. Instead, unplugging the washer or following specific instructions from the owner’s manual can serve the same purpose. If you’re unsure about how to reset your appliance, check your manual or learn more about the types of washing machines to better understand how they function.

WILL UNPLUGGING A WASHING MACHINE RESET IT?

In most cases, unplugging a washing machine will help to reset it. To perform this reset, start by turning off your washer and unplugging it from the wall. Then, wait a few minutes before plugging the power cord back in. You may also need to flip the breaker switch back on or turn the washer dial to restart it.

If possible, ensure all cycles are completed, the washer is empty and the power is off before unplugging your appliance. Always refer to your owner’s manual for more guidance.
