WHY IS MY MICROWAVE TURNTABLE NOT TURNING?

You trust your microwave to quickly get hot food on the table, and an operating malfunction can really slow down mealtime. If your microwave turntable isn’t rotating while in use, you may end up with cold spots in your food.

Use this article to learn more about the causes of a microwave turntable that won’t turn and the possible fixes so that you can get your cooking routine back on track.

WHY DOES THE MICROWAVE TURNTABLE SPIN?

Your microwave cooks food using electromagnetic waves, and many microwaves use a rotating turntable to distribute heat to the entire surface area of your food. The spinning motion helps to prevent cold spots from forming so that you may not have to manually stir your food as often.

However, not all microwaves utilize a spinning turntable. Some models have a cook setting that keeps the turntable still to accommodate larger plates, and others don’t have a rotating option at all.

WHAT CAUSES THE PLATE IN A MICROWAVE TO STOP SPINNING?

  • The turntable is installed incorrectly

  • There is an obstruction blocking the turntable

  • Your microwave’s turntable function has been turned off

  • The turntable motor has malfunctioned

1. Fix the turntable placement

Whether you’re installing your microwave for the first time or you’re replacing the turntable after cleaning, be aware of how you’re placing the part inside the microwave. Microwave turntables should be installed securely on the support hub right side up. Also, make sure that the roller assembly is in place below the turntable.

2. Keep the bottom of the microwave clean

Rotating microwave turntables often sit on a roller track that helps spin the plate in a smooth, fluid motion. Blockages like packaging material, food or debris can disrupt the roller track’s movement and cause your turntable not to spin. Keep the bottom of your microwave clean of any obstructions.

3. Check your microwave settings

Some microwaves have the option to turn off the rotating function of your turntable to fit large or multiple dishes. If your turntable isn’t spinning, use the instructions in your owner’s manual to turn the rotation setting back on.

4. Consider the turntable motor

If you’ve tried everything else and the issue still won’t resolve, there may be a problem with the turntable motor. Using a multimeter, a licensed technician can check the motor for continuity. If the motor doesn’t have continuity, it may need to be repaired or replaced.
