WHAT IS A STOVETOP GRIDDLE?

A stove or range top griddle is typically a large flat pan that spans across the burners of a stove, often with a raised edge to contain oil, butter and other liquids as you cook. Some models come with built-in or removable griddles.

Griddles can be used for a variety of recipes from bacon, quesadillas, fajitas and other foods that require ample cooking space. Additionally, the non-stick surface of the griddle makes it easy to clean up after cooking, allowing you to get in and out of the kitchen with ease.

STEP 1: POSITION GRIDDLE

Place the griddle across two of the stove burners, typically front to back.

Note: If you have a commercial range like this model by KitchenAid brand, your model may come with a built-in griddle. If so, move on to the next step.

STEP 2: PREHEAT GRIDDLE

Preheat the griddle to the desired temperature per your recipe. While some griddles come with a built-in thermometer, you can also use the tried-and-true water droplet method. When a droplet of water sizzles as it hits the surface, your griddle is ready for food.

To ensure that your food cooks properly, it is essential to let your griddle preheat fully. Adding your ingredients before it is hot enough can result in food that cooks too slowly and sticks to the surface of the griddle. If searing meat, let it preheat a bit longer with higher heat than when cooking more delicate foods like pancakes or eggs.

Place the food on the griddle and cook. With tongs or a spatula, gently turn the ingredients per the recipe. For griddles with nonstick coating, wooden or silicone utensils are recommended.

WHAT CAN YOU COOK ON A STOVETOP GRIDDLE?

A stove or range top griddle is an incredibly versatile kitchen tool, perfect for cooking meals quickly and easily. From skillet pizzas to breakfast burritos, cheesy mini burgers to grilled chicken and veggies, a griddle can help you make delicious dishes that are sure to hit the spot.

For more inspiration, below are additional recipe ideas that you can make using your stovetop griddle:

  • Individual grilled pizzas

  • Eggs

  • Bacon

  • Pancakes

  • BBQ steak sandwiches

  • Quesadillas

Choose items that are more self-contained when cooking on a griddle. Because griddles have very low sides, items that require tossing, stirring or tend to roll around are not ideal. Skip items like hot dogs, stir frys, or anything saucey. Pancake batter or eggs still work well despite being runny because they set up quickly.

WHY USE A GRIDDLE INSTEAD OF A PAN?

As far as cooking several ingredients or batches of food at once, griddles can accommodate more food since they are larger and their flat surface allows for even heating. The low sides also make it easier to flip items like pancakes and burgers.

Additionally, some gas cooktop griddles have ridges that help keep food from sticking to the surface and help drain away excess fat when cooking meat.

CAN A GRIDDLE REPLACE A GRILL?

While using a griddle on a stove won’t always be the perfect replacement for a grill, there are a number of advantages to using a griddle. For example, griddles don’t require charcoal or propane and heat up quickly.

Many stovetop models are designed with removable parts which makes them easy to clean and store away when not in use. Additionally, select griddles can be used either indoors or outdoors depending on your needs.
