Your microwave is the key to versatility in your kitchen and can be used for much more than just heating leftovers—it's also a trusted and convenient way to cook rice. Read on for a microwave rice recipe with a quick and easy step-by-step method. Then learn what to do with leftover rice and get proper storage tips.
IS IT OK TO MICROWAVE RICE?
Yes, you can cook rice in the microwave. Microwaving rice, broccoli, and many other dishes, create great results because the turntable helps evenly distribute heat. When cooking rice on a stovetop, there is the chance that excessive heat on the bottom of a pot or pan could possibly scorch your rice if you’re not paying attention. With the microwave method, you don’t have to keep a constant eye on the grains and you also typically don’t get stuck cleaning pots of sticky, stuck-on rice.

STEP 1: RINSE THE RICE
Pour your dry rice grains into the mesh strainer. Run the water through all the grains and stir your rice around with your hands. Continue with this process until the water is clear. Ensure that the water is fully drained.
STEP 2: PREP FOR THE MICROWAVE
Pour the drained rice into your microwave-safe bowl and mix with your preferred ingredients. Add 2 cups water or refer to the product label for the correct ratio of water to rice.
STEP 3: TIME TO COOK!
For 1000-1200 watt microwaves, cook on high for 15 minutes uncovered. Cover tightly to microwave again for another 10 minutes on high. For less powerful microwaves (700 to 900 watts) start your cook time at 20 minutes uncovered at 50% power and again for 10 minutes with the lid on.
STEP 4: LET IT SIT
Carefully remove your rice from the microwave—it will be hot! Keep it covered and let it sit for 6 minutes. When the time has elapsed, carefully uncover your rice and fluff it with a fork. Your rice is ready!

When cooking basmati rice or other wild rice blends in the microwave, follow the same steps above, although it may require more time. The same recipe can also be used to microwave jasmine rice. More absorbent grains may need extra water, such as when you’re microwaving brown rice.
HOW DO YOU STORE RICE AFTER MICROWAVING?
Here are two options for leftover rice: refrigerate or freeze. In an airtight container, cooked rice can last between 3-5 days. To freeze, you’ll need to lay out your rice as a single layer in an airtight container so it can last up to 6 months.
